Advocates called, for example, for a complete elimination of the Annual Earnings Exemption for PWD income earners.

The government’s own BC Budget Consultation process called for the same.

The BC Budget increased the AEE by $1,200, less than half the average market rental rate in Vancouver.

My 60ish year old friend who has been disabled his whole life due to severe mental health trouble has been working a bit recently and getting somewhere with a better wage, etc.

However, he is carefully planning when he won’t work or won’t be able to work. At some point, the AEE represents a fear about the uncertainty of benefits.

That’s right. Work, and the value of work, and increased levels of work have become in this social welfare punishment system “a fear about the uncertainty of benefits.”

Disability income, basic income, the value of work, these go together, balancing acts for one needs to not be a punishment of losing the other.

We should be supported when we are in need. We should be enabled to work if we want to.
