Who we are

Our website address is: https://vancouvergathers.ca. The site design and hosting is managed by Brenden MacDonald, wishing to offer locals in Vancouver a space to share and communicate. However, Brenden is interested in other technically inclined individuals who might offer help. I also wish to include users’ suggestions and feedback moving forward with the site.

Comments and your information

When visitors leave comments, forum posts, or profile biographies on the site, we collect the data shown in the form in order to display it to other users, and we also log the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help with spam detection.

Media and avatars

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After your Gravatar is set up, other signed in users can see your profile picture next to your comment.

Note: If you upload pictures to a website, such as a forum, you shouldn’t upload pictures that have EXIF GPS data embedded in them. Images on the website can be downloaded and might be used to find out where they were taken if this information is not stripped out.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site, you may opt-in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are provided for your convenience so that you do not have to enter your information again when leaving another comment. These cookies will last until your browser clears them.

If you go to our login page, we’ll put a temporary cookie on your computer to see if your browser can handle cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me,” your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

Who we share your data with and how it is used

In fact, protecting our users’ privacy and preventing user exploitation are fundamental principles in the design of these services, and they have been from the start. We collect anonymized, privacy-friendly data in order to get general picture of site use, but we don’t track, collect, or analyze information in any way that connects private user data to such analytics. We don’t want to invade your privacy. We don’t let third parties into our code who will track you. We don’t want to sell your information to anyone. We don’t want to sell you anything.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, a post, or an image, the information and metadata about it will be kept indefinitely. This is so that any follow-up comments can be safely recognized and approved without having to wait in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website, we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This doesn’t include any information that we have to keep for legal, administrative, or security reasons.

Where your data is sent

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
